History (the long story)

I am the third generation Coulstring to repairing instruments that I know of. My grandfather Edward Coulstring was known as the original Dr. Piano in Yarmouth Nova Scotia. His primary job was repairing and tuning pianos, however he repaired other instruments from violins, guitars to wind instruments such as tubas, flutes and saxophones. His son (my father) Lionel Coulstring worked along with “Pops” repairing these instruments. Pops and Dad were in bands playing the piano and the passion for music would continue onto me. Since I was a child, I would sit around and watch Pops, Dad or my uncle (Nevin) play their original piano masterpieces they wrote. I started playing piano at the age of 8. I don’t really remember “learning” to play as I just started… “playing”. At the age of 13, my father gave me his Gibson SG. He had handcrafted a new neck for it because the original was broken and there my love for the guitar begun.

Following in the footsteps of my family writing our own music,as a guitarist, I formed my first band in 1995 while in high school rehearsing in a garage (Yes a garage band). I would go on for the next two decades as a guitarist and song writer forming such bands as Inferno Racket, MNS award winning and ECMA nominee band Chaos Theory and now my current project Monsters Are Human.

My work life has always been technical, mechanical and creative. I had worked in carpentry, plumbing, mechanic, computer technician, graphic design and web design. My vast interest into the technical side of things and how they work has help shape my knowledge on repairing guitars for the past 25 years. Through the years I dug into how guitars work and how musicians play them allowing me to offer the guitarist the best playing experience their guitar can offer.

Fast forward to now, I run a business doing what I truly love. I hope to see you soon.
